Education surprisingly translated
One of the most challenging tasks in the architecture is the design of a school. How do you create the right environment for one of the most vulnerable groups in our society, young children? Different opinions about what a school should be. According to architect Herman Hertzberger (1932 -), the doyen of the Dutch education architecture, you design a school as a city, just as challenging, inspiring and innovative places where students learn, play and meet. It should be a second home, where they feel safe, secure and protected. A school design with the world of the child as a starting point, which is pretty obvious? But nowadays, a school must have also distinguished themselves in the education market as an attractive and efficient institution, with its own identity.
A balance between all these views is found in the new home of 'De Spreng'. The bright green with bright yellow interior of the Amsterdam designer Ramin Visch is distinctive. Upon entering the interior unfolds as a green landscape, with hills and valleys, vistas and obstacles and orange street furniture. There are places to hide behind the stairs coming up from the floor and places to hide, in the pit under the stairs. And there is a large open field in which to work and to play, to be seen and to see others. The interior makes a strong statement for the school: education in a modern way and that they like to see.
Innovative Education
Separate funding streams and increasingly stringent laws and regulations regarding use of space and maintenance of educational buildings provide architects headaches. The ever changing ideas about what constitutes good teaching is also difficult. In recent years, 'The New Learning' eagerly embraced. Instead of classroom instruction with a teacher who explains how it is, tell recent pedagogical concepts that children learn better when they are responsible, along with other information retrieval and transfer. Organizing their own learning process requires other school buildings. Buildings with large open floor in groups can be worked in different ways, instead of long corridors with classrooms. 'De Spreng' also now made the leap to a modern, focuses on cooperation concept of education in a community school, nursery and after-school care. As one of the fourteen schools in the Foundation Protestant Christian Education Gelderland Valley, 'De Spreng' leave of mere classroom teaching and children of different levels learn together. As students read from the superstructure from the substructure, the so-called 'buddy reading'. Therefore, the team wanted an interior with lots of open, undefined places, where different activities can take place. So few walls and transparency.

The demand for a transparent and open interior is according Ramin Visch the dream of every designer. 'The downside is that everything is visible in the space. That requires a strict control over all the elements in the design, to put down as a quiet and unambiguous image Certainly in a school, cause a pressure where teaching supplies, toys and papers of the children, this is indispensable. I want to bring peace into a space where much is happening. '
It does this with a simple concept: the basis is a green, rubber floor plate, with holes for the existing architectural volumes. Consequent rise elements as the stairs and the walls, which flaps are folded against the painted yellow cores. This yellow volumes are enlarged by Visch, so that more features can be included, such as pantries and cupboards. The green walls are useful to ensure there are lockers, storage compartments and power sockets in. This folding concept is worked out to the smallest detail. The orange ottomans provide a warm and lively contrast. The black in the lettering and structural elements such as columns, and jumps through the image. To separate premises located along the facade of the leather squares, glass walls in white lists are applied. This is daylight in the heart of the building and there is always contact between the various sites. With sliding walls are premises or to the gym in the squares or separate. The interior of Visch as it were, in the shell of the building of architect Hofland pushed and could get a strong individual character.

"Students grow in a safe, stimulating learning environment', is the motto of 'De Spreng'. They worked with Visch because his way of looking addressed them and gave him complete freedom. Visch calls the client, in turn, also brave: she went without any experience in this process, full of energy, full of confidence and with the intention of becoming everything together to solve. Their vision of the new educational system, they saw surprisingly translated.
